Toronto-area students often compare programs by start date and commute first. Those factors matter, but the credential and field experience should lead the decision.
Confirm the credential
Ask the provider to state the complete credential name in writing. Confirm whether the program is an Early Childhood Assistant certificate, an Early Childhood Education diploma, or another credential. If your goal involves the protected ECE or RECE title, verify the education requirements directly with Ontario’s College of Early Childhood Educators.
Review the curriculum
Request the current course outline. Look for child development, observation, inclusive practice, health and safety, communication, professional responsibilities, and the way learning is assessed. Ask which classes are synchronous, asynchronous, in person, or online.
Understand field placement
- How many field-placement hours are included?
- Who arranges the placement and in which GTA areas?
- What schedules should students expect?
- Which police screening, health, immunization, CPR, or first-aid documents are required?
- What happens if a student cannot meet a placement requirement?
- Are placement travel and documentation costs included?
Compare admission requirements
Requirements can differ by provider. Confirm academic prerequisites, language requirements, document formats, assessment requirements, and deadlines. Ask the institution to review your individual documents before you assume that you qualify.
Calculate time and total cost
| Comparison point | What to record |
|---|---|
| Weekly schedule | Class days, start and end times, labs, and possible changes |
| Placement | Hours, timing, travel area, supervision, and prerequisites |
| Tuition | Published tuition and payment schedule |
| Additional costs | Books, screening, health records, CPR, supplies, travel, and graduation |
| Commute | Travel time at the actual class and placement hours |
Check student support
Ask who provides academic help, placement preparation, technology support, accessibility services, and career-development information. A promise that “support is available” is less useful than a named office, process, and response standard.
Compare written evidence
Save the official program page, fee list, refund policy, enrolment contract, course outline, and emails answering your questions. If a claim about credential recognition, transfer, placement, or employment matters to your decision, ask for the official source.
